Concrete is something that most of us take for granted today, but where did it really come from? Thousands of years ago, a kind of concrete was used by every major civilization. The ancient Egyptians, the Ottomans, Babylonians, and even before used different types of clay or Lime in bonding compounds they used to build huge marvels of architecture. The structure of that cement wasn’t much different then the structure used today. A hard, un-reactive particulate like gravel (often called an aggregate) is held together with cement and water. The first modern concrete was in the mid 18th century by adding a more coarse aggregate and powdered brick into the cement. The next major breakthrough in concrete in 1824 with Portland cement, which is still used today in construction cement. It was the first “artificial” cement that is used by burning Lime with clay, which ended up being chemically stronger. Depending on how smooth, or how coarse the aggregate is, the concrete surface will be either smooth or coarse. Fine aggregate is usually used for something like a surface or a slab that you will be walking on. Another concrete commonly used in construction is reinforced concrete. This type of concrete has imbedded steel that further strengthens it greatly. It was originally invented by a French Gardener named Joseph Monier who made garden pots.
